South Craven Community Action, (SCCA), formally South Craven Volunteer Bureau was established in 1984 and is one of 18 Local Development Agencies in North Yorkshire. SCCA is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee. Managed by elected representatives of the local community and other voluntary organisations, SCCA is a member of the North Yorkshire Forum of Voluntary Organisations and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations.

SCCA exists to support community and voluntary organisations and to develop new initiatives within the district of South Craven - although some areas of work touch on other areas of Craven.

This is achieved by offering services such as:-

administrative support, pay roll services, photocopying, training, sale of stationary, publicity and a newsletter.

Providing information on a wide variety of subjects:-

funding, employment legislation, constitutions, financial management, local services/organisations.

SCCA also undertakes consultation work on behalf of and with other organisations, North Yorkshire Health Authority, North Yorkshire Social Services to mention but a few.

In terms of Direct Provision SCCA manages four projects, South Craven Carers Relief Scheme, South Craven Out of School Club and Holiday Playscheme, The Glusburn Institute Playgroup and the Glusburn Institute Parent and Toddler Group. Other projects SCCA has established and continues to support are the Airedale Epilepsy Group, Craven Group for the Deaf, Skipton Victim Support, South Craven Elderly Initiative Group (SCEIG) and Co-ordinators of Voluntary Organisations in Craven (COVOC).

Looking forward to the new Millennium, SCCA is currently working with South Craven School Community Education to develop facilities for young people in Cross Hills and also plans to extend the client group that the Carers Relief Scheme can work with.

Glusburn Institute Playgroup was originally opened in September 1977. It was formed and organised by several "Mums" :- Mary Askew, Gillian Wilson, Gail Morgan and Gill Birks. They thought that it would be nice to have a purpose built playcentre at the Institute so submitted plans to have the Playgroup room developed. Through a lot of fund-raising, tables and chairs were bought from Carlton School. South Craven College students volunteered to make a climbing frame, bookcases and wooden toys all of which we still have to this day in September 1999.

The philosophy of the Playgroup is to enhance the physical, emotional, social and intellectual development of children from two and half years to school entry age.

A typical Playgroup morning is as follows:- Mums, Dads or Carers arrive with their children from 9.00am to 9.15am. Most parents stay with their children for a little while, to begin with and leave when their settled. We always carry out some creative activity which carries a seasonal or Celebratory theme, for each session. The children's activities include playing in the sandpit, water, paints, dough, dressing-up, puzzles, toys, bikes, prams, wheelbarrows, cars and many more. We then, have "snack time" - crisps, fruit and biscuits. We sometimes ice biscuits to take home but most are eaten at snack-time! If it is a nice day we go outside to play on a fenced-in grassed area with a garden.

Finally we have tidy-up-time and then all sit-in the story corner finishing with a song or nursery rhyme. On a recent survey to the parents of playgroup children we were complimented on the safe and secure environment and extended family atmosphere.

There are three Playgroup Leaders Nicola Wheeler, Nicola Garner and Emma Stevenson. They are qualified staff and have training in childcare.

The Playgroup runs in conjunction with Glusburn County Primary School holidays and term time.

The Playgroup sessions are as follows:-

Monday 9.15am - 11.45am

Tuesday 9.15am - 11.45am

Thursday 9.15am - 11.45am

Send for a prospectus to :-

Glusburn Institute Playcentre also operates a "Parent and Toddler" scheme which runs every Friday from 10am - 11.45am. Cost £1 per family.

What a mouthful! It's enough to put you off reading any further - but please stay with me because what we do is really rather wonderful and very much appreciated by the people who use our service.

The Scheme was set up five years ago to provide care for elderly dependant people in their own home whilst their main carer takes a break to do their shopping, get their hair done, meet friends, go to the pub - whatever!

Obviously carers have found the service extremely helpful and many use us on a regular basis for a few hours each week, and whilst we primarily cover the South Craven area we do get requests from further afield and are happy to help when we can.

Our relief carers are all people who have had experience of caring and they are all trained in emergency aid, health and safety and manual handling.

We are funded mainly by Social Services and can provide up to a total of 75 hours relief care a week and we are based at Glusburn Institute operating under the umbrella of South Craven Community Action.

The best news of all is that our clients pay absolutely nothing, although we are always happy to receive donations. All information is treated in confidence and there are no gimmicks or catches of any kind.

Each June we help carers to celebrate National Carers' Week and this year we enjoyed a strawberry tea and entertainment at Sutton Baptist Church.

If you are caring for an elderly relative or friend and need to get out but feel unable to do so, we are the answer to your prayers. Please contact me between 9.30am - 1.00pm Monday - Thursday on 01535 634588 and see what we can do for you. As the manager of the scheme my aim is to help improve the quality of life for carers of elderly people, living in the South Craven Area.
